I wanted to study Karate from the time I was in the sixth grade. I grew up in the era of Bruce Lee, and I wanted to be able to fight like Bruce—to defend myself in any situation. While still in school I longed to know how to fight because I craved power over the man who robbed me of my childhood. As I grew older, I wanted to fight because I wanted vengeance from the man who robbed me of my childhood. When the opportunity to study Martial Arts presented itself, it was finally my chance to right the wrongs that were inflicted on me. However, the truth is, the longer I studied, the more the need for retribution diminished!
Continuing with my studies, I began to know myself and understand the Inner Strength I possessed. Staying in the game, not quitting, and succeeding when no one believes in you takes strength. I learned that what happened to me did not control me, what mattered is that I learned from my past. Some people believe that knowledge is power; I am here to tell you that “applied” knowledge is power!
I KNOW my calling and passion is to educate women and empower them to discover their Inner Strength. Who do you want to be? What do you want to do?
As a Long Beach, California native, I am the most positive person I know. I have been a student and teacher of the Martial Arts since 1994. When speaking, coaching and working with clients, I incorporate my background and knowledge of the Martial Arts to show women the Inner Strength they possess but may not realize. I believe that once a woman begins to realize the power from within, she starts asking herself, "If I can do that, what else can I accomplish?
What New Beginning could you create for yourself if you were to discover your Inner Strength? If this is something you have always wanted to try, go ahead… what are you waiting for?
Do you have a dream or a goal that is so big; you will amaze even yourself when you reach it? Jack Canfield (of Chicken Soup for the Soul and the Success Principles books) calls that a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal).
My BHAG was to write my first book. When I finished the book and it was in the final stages of being published, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar where Jack Canfield was speaking. Since 1994, I had been reading Jack's books, listening to his audios and using his teachings in my life and business; Jack had truly become my mentor.
I decided to give a copy of my book to Jack Canfield because I wanted to let him know how much his teachings had improved my life. When I arrived at the hotel, I left a copy of my book at the front desk and asked them to deliver the envelope with my book to his room.
Do you believe in luck? Whether you call it luck, fate, kismet, chance, etc. it was with me that weekend!
The seminar was scheduled for Friday night, all day Saturday and a half day on Sunday; Jack was scheduled to speak on Sunday morning. I checked into the hotel on Friday afternoon, put my luggage in my room and went to the Friday session. After the Friday session, I went back to my room, put my key in the lock and the key did not work. I went back to the front desk, asked for a new key and then decided to ask for 2 keys, just to be safe!
The next morning I went down to the seminar and when we stopped for a morning break, I decided to use the restroom in my room rather than wait in line in the women’s restroom. I went to my room, put my key in the lock and the key did not work. Lucky for me, I had a second key! When we broke for lunch, I went back to my room, put my key in the lock, and… you guessed it, it didn’t work. I guess you could say that I was having bad “key karma”… or was I?
When I went back down to the lobby to get more keys, there was Jack Canfield; talking with a group of women from our seminar. I went to the front desk, asked for 2 more room keys and then joined the group where Jack was talking. When he finished talking I said “hello,” and told him that I was looking forward to hearing him speak on Sunday. He thanked me and then I went to the elevators. As my elevator door opened, Jack and his assistant stepped inside; we were the only 3 in the elevator. I smiled at Jack; he smiled back and asked how I was. I replied, “Fabulous, I just wrote a book.” He smiled and said, “That’s great, I will have to get a copy and read it.” I smiled and said, “You already have a copy, I sent a copy to your room.” Jack smiled and said, “How very enterprising of you!” I smiled back and said, “I learn from the best Jack!”
The elevator ride was quickly over; I said “good-bye” and exited onto my floor. I was overjoyed; not only had I had sent a copy of my book, titled Chocolate or Vanilla, Life Is All About Choices to Jack’s room, but I also had the opportunity to have him put a face to the book!
The next morning, when Jack was introduced on stage, he thanked everyone for the applause and then said, “Before I go any farther, I want to share something with the audience. Yesterday, I met a woman on the elevator and she has just written a book titled Chocolate or Vanilla, Life Is All About Choices.” I nearly fell out of my seat. I saw people in the audience scrambling for pen and paper to write down the book that Jack had just recommended AND IT WAS MY BOOK!!!!
After Jack had finished speaking, he was posing for pictures and talking with people in the hall. I waited my turn in line and when I got to him I said, “Thank you. My first response is to tell you that you have no idea what you have done for me, but then, I know you do know what you have done for me.” Jack smiled at me and said, “Hey, I didn’t do it for you, it is a very inspiring book.”
Writing my book was just part of my New Beginnings and I am truly thankful for all of the people that have come into my life to be a part of my journey to success. What is your BHAG? As Jack would say, “If you want to move from where you are to where you want to be, create your BHAG and reach high!
