Who are the real life heros in your life?
I have many and one of them is Lori Lober. When I first met Lori, we became instant friends and have remained friends ever since. One of the traits that Lori has is her tireless commitment to educating women about breast cancer and sharing her story with others. I recently had the privilege to interview Lori Lober on Life's About Choices Radio.
If you or someone you know is facing breast cancer, please share this blog with her. It could very possibly save her life!
Here are the answers to the questions from today's show:
Q: How long do you have to keep checking for cancer after you have gone in to remission?
A: Each and every diagnosis of cancer is different and everyone should consult with their oncologist about their particular stage and type.
Q: When you get through one cancer is it possible to get another type of cancer?
A: Yes; absolutely! That's why I cringe when someone goes through treatment and makes no lifestyle changes and thinks "they're done!" In my mind, once their treatment is finished their journey has just begun!
Q: Is there other preventions other then radiation?
A: Radiation is not a prevention, it's a treatment for certain types/stages of cancer. I wish I knew what "prevention" is out there - in my mind so much of the cause of cancer is the breakdown of our immune system.
Q: Can you opt just cut it out?
A: Yes, but I'd obtain multiple opinions not only from surgeons but also from oncologists before I "just cut" anything out! You cannot take a cut back and sometimes pre-operative chemotherapy will be needed.
Q: Can cancer be cut away and be gone?
A: I guess there have been instances of that, yes. (Depending on the type of cancer it was and the stage it was at the time of diagnosis.)
Q: How did cancer change the way you do things?
A: It changed how I look at life, it changed how beautiful life truly is and it changed how I fuel my body. I believe nutrition plays a huge role in the strength of my immune system and I eat to constantly build my immune system. I pray a lot more, I believe in angels - cancer really changed my life as I new it but I wouldn't change my cancer journey/my life journey for anything.
Q: What is in the book?
A: My book?! It chronicles my cancer journey. It can be found at www.isasalestools.com - just click on books and scroll til you find "LOVE TO LIVE - ALIVE & THRIVING!" It's not rocket science; it's just my story!
Q: Does the book walk you through the feelings and ordeals with cancer?
A: Yes, with regard to my personal journey.
Q: Is there a test that can see if cancer runs through family?
A: Yes there is. I believe geneticists can help guide you with testing!
Q: Is there anything to do that can prevent cancer?
A: That's the gazillion dollar question . . .
Q: There is talk about a cure, is there any truth to this?
A: That's another gazillion dollar question . . . I believe stress, toxicity and depleted immune systems play a huge role in the diagnosis of cancer.
Q: Can positive thinking help you get better?
A: If you don't have a positive attitude and see yourself as "whole and well" on the other side of a cancer diagnosis I believe the odds of you getting better decline significantly.
Q: With all the advanced medical data and technology why are there so many wrong diagnosis?
A: Good question. It's a fact that 40-50% of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our life. I believe many people die never knowing cancer is even in their body . . . the incidence of cancer is not going down because of technology or medicine. Isn't that sad? I wish I knew what we could do to save more people and properly diagnose more people correctly earlier on. Just keep getting more opinions and don't take "NO!" for an answer if something in your gut says to keep pushing.
Q: So a lump could mean something else?
A: Sure; a lump could be a benign cyst that means absolutely nothing! Again, I'd obtain a fine needle aspiration before it's removed and I'd have more than one pathology test on everything biopsied.
Q: Can a lump be removed to get rid of it?
A: Yes but I wouldn't remove it without having it biopsied in advance.
Q: How do you know when something is there to get checked?
A: Again, if there's something in your gut telling you that things are not right . . . go with your gut! Seek multiple opinions if things are still not feeling right!
Q: What size of a lump would one be concerned about?
A: Any lump; no matter what size it is should be checked.
Q: Are there signs other then lumps for cancer?
A: Yes, Google it - tons of them!
Q: How would someone know if cancer is present?
A: The only way to properly diagnose it, at least with breast cancer, is with a biopsy - I am not familiar with all the types of cancers!
Q: How many types of cancer are there?
A: Tons of different types and each type has different stages! Look at the NIH web site!!
Q: Are any of them able to be cured?
A: Yes, many cancers, if caught in the early stages can be cured!
Q: Are there doctors out there that will listen to you?
A: Yes; just keep searching if you don't feel you're being heard and they're not willing to be your head coach! I, personally, sought out oncologists who are specialists in metastatic breast cancer at "Comprehensive Cancer Centers".
Q: Are there doctors that want to help in the best way?
A: Yes but many still believe the only options are radiation, surgery or chemotherapy and you need to seek out all the options that may be available for your particular type and stage of cancer. That's why I'm a huge fan of clinical trials.
Q: Does anyone know the cause of cancers?
A: Scientists and doctors work every day trying to find the cause and/or cure for cancer. Millions of dollars are being spent but unfortunately, in my opinion, I don't believe we're getting closer to knowing.
Q: Is there a best way to deal with cancer?
A: Everyone diagnosed will need to deal in the manner that is right for them. There is no manual that will guide each and every one of us who hear the words "you have cancer" - I hope anyone diagnosed will read my book 'cause I've outlined everything that has worked for me!
Q: Why haven't we found a better way to prevent this?
A: Another gazillion dollar question!!! I pray every day and every night that we find one soon! I'd love to keep others from having to endure what I've endured for the past 14 years . . .
Lori Lober isnot making any medical claims and is not medically trained in any way. These are her personal opinions based on her experience with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer!
“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”
