My daughters were preschoolers and the three of us were at the mall when a woman walked up to me and said, "enjoy every minute you have with them because when you blink they will be grown." And then she walked away.
At the time, I had never heard of the Law of Attraction but I do believe I attracted that woman into my life that day. She was a complete stranger to me but of all the advice that I have received about motherhood, her words came to my mind many times over the years.
She was right, I blinked and my babies were having babies of their own! I know so much more as a grandmother than I did as a mother and there were many times that I found myself thinking, "If I only knew then what I know now!"
How many times in our lives do we wish we could go back in time and undo a choice or condition to have a better outcome? We could spend our days wishing we had known more, made different choices, and knew then what we know now but what would be the point? Wishing you could change the past is a waste of time and energy in the present.
The truth is, we knew exactly what we were supposed to know at the time to create who we are today. Every choice a person makes has a ripple effect with the people who come into our lives. Children grow up thinking they will be better parents than the parents they had and most who think this way truly do find a way to parent at a higher level. Keeping in mind that every new way of thinking, every new way to parent came from something that didn't work well in our own lives reminds us that we are all here to learn and add to the collective knowledge that will bring about a change to expand our thinking.
Just like we no longer allow small children to ride in the car without car seats and seat belts, you would have been hard pressed to pass that law in the 1950's. We all have experiences in our lives, both positive and negative, and it is so important to remind ourselves that it isn't what happens to us in our lives but what we do with what happens to us.
We can blame people, places and conditions, hold grudges and refuse to let go of negative thoughts and beliefs or we can embrace what was, learn from it, heal, and move forward.
We can also remind ourselves how quickly time passes. When we think that a certain event or condition will last forever, the Universe has a way of reminding us exactly how precious every moment of every day is in our life.
So the next time you say to yourself, "If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now," stop and ask yourself, "what am I doing with the moments that I have right here and now to make every second count? Am I spending time in a career I love? Am I spending quality time with my family? Do I wake up every single morning looking forward to my J.O.B. (Jump Outta Bed)?" If you don't like the answers you come up with, would NOW be a good time to make some changes in your life?
Or would you rather wait 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years from now and be saying yourself, "If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now!"
