Do you believe that “like attracts like?” Do you believe that “what we think about, we bring about?” How can we attract “like” people from halfway around the world?
Gertrude and I met through Facebook while she was preparing to host a Global Woman’s Summit in Uganda. We found that we have things in common and decided to Skype with each other; she from her home in Africa and me from my home in California. Gertrude shared with me that she is teaching the young women in her village to learn a trade to build women and girls’ collective power across race and class from the ground up. She contacted me through Facebook to ask me how she could get a copy of my book. I told her I would be happy to mail a copy to her and within a few weeks (their mail is very slow) she sent me another message…
…I am glad to inform you that I received your book yesterday evening and what I have so far read, it all sounds like an African story. What happened to you is very common here, only mothers rarely become so hard to their children the way yours was! But the reason was clear. Thanks for being bold enough to share the not so sweet life experiences. We thought that such a life doesn't exist in your country, but the book is revealing a lot. I am continuing to read the book and I will write down my lessons from it. God bless.
When Gertrude finished my book she sent me another request through Facebook…
…I need to send you my humble request. At Women and Girls Can Initiative, we are running a Women Self Help Fund and kindly I need to request you to allow us to name it after you, i.e. Nancy Women's Self Help Fund. Am doing this in dedication to the divine connection, passion and love you have showed. This is the only way I feel I can have something to give and keep us together in action and thought. I will be very grateful when I get to hear from you.
Gertrude is making a difference in the lives of the young women in her village. She is sharing an opportunity for a New Beginning by empowering them to draw on their own gifts and talents. I am honored to be a part of the opportunity to open their minds by sharing our collective knowledge. Our past has made us who we are; remember, you never know who might need to hear your story!
