Emily Post used to be THE woman to turn to whenever you needed to learn the etiquette's of society.
Today, with all of our diverse cultures and backgrounds, the etiquette's of society have gone the way of the Remington Typewriter. What was thought to be taboo in the 1920’s wouldn’t even cause someone to bat an eye in today’s society.
While technology, social awareness, culture acceptance, (just to name a few) have certainly come a long way, WHAT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE R.S.V.P.?
Why is an R.S.V.P. important? Whether you are a bride planning her catering needs, an event planner planning a gala for the White House or simply a family pot luck; knowing how many guests will be in attendance is important for a successful event.
We all KNOW this to be true and yet, time and time again I hear people talking in frustration about the lack of response to an R.S.V.P. request. Why has this become a lost act of respect in today's society? Do people wait to R.S.V.P. because they are holding out for a better invitation? Do people forget to reply, and if so, do they forget because the event didn’t mean enough to remember? OR, has society simply lost all standards of social etiquette?
According to Wikipedia, the high society of England adopted French etiquette in the late 18th century, and the writings of Emily Post aimed to offer a standard no more stringent than that tradition. Emily post wrote that "Anyone receiving an invitation with an R.S.V.P. on it is obliged to reply.... and breaching this standard as "inexcusably rude".
Emily Post advised anyone receiving an invitation with an R.S.V.P. on it must reply promptly, and should reply within a day or two of receiving the invitation.
More and more people are going into business for themselves and, as such, are only held to their own standards of social etiquette. What can you do to start a Social Etiquette Revolution to demand higher standards from the people you do business with?
Where is Emily Post when you need her?
