Why Do I Keep Reacting to the Past? | Clearing The Attic #1: The Box
Every conversation begins with a metaphor. The real conversation begins when you notice it in your own life.
Most of us never wake up one morning and decide to carry fear, guilt, shame, resentment, or the belief that we're not enough.

Life happens.
An experience leaves an impression.
A story begins.

Before we know it, we've quietly placed that experience into a box and carried it with us for years - sometimes without even realizing it's still there.
The question isn't whether you've been carrying something (most of us have)...

Why do experiences from years ago still affect us today? Have you ever found yourself reacting to something small and wondered... "Why did that affect me so much?" Maybe it wasn't really about what happened today. Maybe it was something placed in a box years ago. Welcome to Clearing The Attic—a series of conversations exploring the boxes we've been carrying through life and what happens when we're willing to gently open them. In conversation #1: The Box, we begin exploring the central metaphor behind the series and discover why painful experiences often aren't healed—they're simply stored away in the attic of our minds. The memories themselves aren't what continue affecting us. It's the unresolved energy we've attached to those experiences. This first conversation is an invitation to begin noticing the boxes you've been carrying... because every journey through the attic begins by opening the very first one. Until next time... Notice what you're keeping in the box.

🗝️ This Week's Attic Invitation: This week, simply notice...
When you describe yourself, are you describing what you are...
or are you describing what you've been carrying?
Don't try to answer the question.
Just notice.
Then quietly ask yourself...
What is already here before the story begins?

👀 What Did You Notice?

One of the most interesting things about a box is that it only has value because of what we believe is inside it.
The same can be be true of the stories we carry.
Sometimes we spend years protecting a box we've never stopped to examine.
Not because we need to fix it.
Simply because we've forgotten that carrying the box and being the box are not the same thing.
Some conversations are enough to carry with you for a week, others may open the door to questions you'd like to explore more deeply.
If that happens, I'd be honored to continue the conversation with you.

The sensei picked up the teapot and began to pour tea into one of the cups.
When the cup was full, she kept pouring and soon tea was running down the sides of the cup and into the tray.

The student pointed to the cup and said, “Stop, can’t you see the cup is full and no more will go in?”
The sensei smiled and said, “Like this cup, your mind is full of what you believe and don’t believe.

Before you can learn more, you must empty your cup to make room.
