Why Is It So Hard to Trust Again? | Clearing The Attic #2: The Lock
|
Every conversation begins with a metaphor. The real conversation begins when you notice it in your own life.
|
Sometimes we believe the hardest part is opening the box.
But before we ever stored something away… we usually created a way to protect it. That's the lock. The lock isn't the memory. It isn't the experience. It's the protection we built around it. Sometimes that protection looks like independence. Sometimes it looks like perfectionism. Sometimes it sounds like, "I'm fine." |
Why is it so hard to trust again after we've been hurt? Have you ever promised yourself... "I'm never going to let that happen again." Maybe you became more cautious. Maybe you stopped opening your heart. Maybe you created rules to protect yourself without even realizing it. Welcome to Clearing The Attic - a series of conversations exploring the boxes we've been carrying through life and what happens when we're willing to gently open them. In conversation #2: The Lock, we explore why we lock painful experiences away and how those locks are often created to protect us from being hurt again. The experiences themselves aren't what keep us guarded. It's the meaning we've attached to those experiences that keeps the lock in place. Every lock has a purpose. It keeps painful stories, fear, shame, and old beliefs tucked safely away - but it also keeps freedom from entering. This conversation is an invitation to gently notice what you've been protecting... and to consider that every lock has a key. Until next time... Notice what you're protecting.
🗝️ This Week's Attic Invitation - This week, simply notice the moments when you feel yourself becoming guarded.
Notice when you explain yourself.
Notice when you defend yourself.
Notice when you withdraw.
Don't try to change any of it.
Just notice.
Then quietly ask yourself…
What am I protecting right now?
And before the story answers…
What is already here before the story begins?
Notice when you explain yourself.
Notice when you defend yourself.
Notice when you withdraw.
Don't try to change any of it.
Just notice.
Then quietly ask yourself…
What am I protecting right now?
And before the story answers…
What is already here before the story begins?
👀 What Did You Notice?
Protection isn't a mistake.
It's an intelligent response to something that once felt overwhelming.
The interesting question isn't whether you've created a lock.
Most of us have.
The question is whether you've begun to believe the lock is who you are.
Awareness doesn't ask us to remove our protection.
It gently invites us to notice that what we are has never been defined by it.
Sometimes that single recognition changes everything.
