Why Do I Keep Telling Myself the Same Story? | Clearing The Attic #6: The Story
Every conversation begins with a metaphor. The real conversation begins when you notice it in your own life.
Why do we keep telling ourselves the same story - even when it no longer serves us?

Maybe it's a story about not being enough. A story about failure. A story about loss, rejection, or the life you thought you would have.

Welcome to Clearing The Attic - a series of conversations exploring the boxes we've been carrying through life and what happens when we're willing to gently open them.

In Conversation #6: The Story, we explore how the stories we tell ourselves quietly shape the way we experience our lives. The question isn't whether your story is true. The question is: Who would you be if you weren't constantly referring to the story? Over time, we can begin to mistake the story for who we are. But the story isn't the problem. It's believing the story without ever questioning the beliefs that give it meaning. This conversation is an invitation to simply notice the stories you return to again and again... and to gently ask yourself: What exists before this story? Until next time... Notice the stories you keep telling yourself.

🗝️ This Week's Attic Invitation - This week, notice the stories that quietly arise throughout your day.
Perhaps it's a story about who you are.
What someone else thinks of you.
What happened in the past.
Or what you believe is possible.
When you notice one, don't try to change it.
Simply pause and ask yourself:
"What exists before the story begins?"
There isn't a right answer.
Just an invitation to notice.

👀 What Did You Notice?
Stories often feel true.
They explain who we are.
Why things happened.
What we can expect from life.

Over time, we stop noticing that they're stories at all.
We simply begin living from them.
But perhaps every story is just another box in the attic.
And perhaps the invitation isn't to rewrite the story...
It's to notice what has always been here before the story began.
The story may still be remembered.
But the belief that it defines who you are begins to soften.

The sensei picked up the teapot and began to pour tea into one of the cups.
When the cup was full, she kept pouring and soon tea was running down the sides of the cup and into the tray.

The student pointed to the cup and said, “Stop, can’t you see the cup is full and no more will go in?”
The sensei smiled and said, “Like this cup, your mind is full of what you believe and don’t believe.

Before you can learn more, you must empty your cup to make room.
