Why Do Some People Push My Buttons? | Clearing The Attic #4: The Trigger

Every conversation begins with a metaphor. The real conversation begins when you notice it in your own life.

The Trigger
Most of us think a trigger is something that happens to us. Someone says something. A memory surfaces. A situation doesn't go the way we expected. Suddenly we're angry... hurt... afraid... or defensive. It feels as though the trigger caused the reaction. But what if the trigger isn't creating anything? What if it's simply revealing something that was already waiting beneath the surface? |
Why do some people seem to push your buttons while others don't? Have you ever found yourself thinking... "I thought I was over this. Why am I reacting again?" Maybe the trigger isn't creating your reaction. Maybe it's revealing something that's been there all along. Welcome to Clearing The Attic - a series of conversations exploring the boxes we've been carrying through life and what happens when we're willing to gently open them. In conversation #4: The Trigger, we explore why certain people, situations, and experiences affect us so deeply - and why those moments may be invitations rather than interruptions. A trigger is simply life knocking on the attic door. It isn't there to punish you - it may be inviting you to notice something that's been waiting to be seen. Triggers don't create what's inside us. They simply reveal the stories, beliefs, and stored energy we've been carrying. Instead of asking, "Why did that person upset me?" perhaps a more helpful question is, "What is this situation inviting me to notice?" This conversation is an invitation to stop fearing your triggers and begin seeing them as opportunities to discover what has been waiting to be seen. Until next time... Notice what life is inviting you to see.
🗝️ This Week's Attic Invitation - This week, simply notice the moments when you feel triggered.
Before following the story...
Pause.
Take one gentle breath.
Ask yourself...
What is this experience inviting me to notice?
Then quietly ask...
What is already here before the story begins?

👀 What Did You Notice?
Triggers often feel personal.
They can convince us that someone else is responsible for how we feel.
But a trigger doesn't tell us who we are.
It simply points toward a story we've believed.
Awareness isn't asking us to eliminate every trigger.
It's inviting us to notice the difference between what happened...
and the story that immediately followed.
Sometimes that single moment of noticing changes everything.
